Already Missing Mei Mei

I’m currently sitting in a living room in Chicago, watching more snow relentlessly drop from a gray sky. We are halfway along on our cross-country voyage to Los Angeles, and I have a lot of photos and recipes I need to sort through from our final days in Boston. Our last few weeks out there passed in quite the blur– after a decade in the city, it took all I had to sort it out, pack it up, and move on out. It still hasn’t really hit me that we don’t live in Massachusetts anymore. There’s so many people and things I am going to miss.

Toward the top of my Boston miss list is, of course, Mei Mei.
I’ve been on team Li kids since the beginning — watching them turn their food truck dreams into reality like the smart, scrappy business owners they are. This past November, the siblings did it again and opened their brick-and-mortar restaurant in Audobon Circle.

I’m biased, sure (my best friend is co-owner Andy’s wife). But I’m confident in saying that no one deserves success as much as these guys. Andy, Mei and Irene are three of the hardest working, creative and thoughtful people I have ever encountered. It shows in everything, from their innovative menu to the cheerful ambiance of their new spot. I went to Mei Mei back in December with my BFF and her family for a quick lunch. The menu for lunch is much like the food truck– signature scallion pancake sandwiches, delicious dumplings and other snacks. I have been really loving their winter cabbage salad lately– but this day we stuck with two types of dumplings (pork and sweet potato), a Double Awesome (poached-then-fried-eggs with local pesto on a scallion pancake. It’s life changing, legit) and some corn fritters.

I’ve also gone to Mei Mei for dinner service quite a few times since opening, and I cannot rave about it enough. The dinner dishes are more high-end and composed, but with the same unique twists and delicious attention to detail you’ve come to expect from the Street Kitchen.

I could go on and on about Mei Mei– as you can see they also were Matty’s place of employment leading up to our departure. They took good care of my guy, much like they do all their employees it seems, and he came home after every shift with a smile. These guys really do love what they are doing, and it shows on every face and every plate.

I’m excited about culinary adventures in LA, but for now I’m missing a place where everybody knew my name. Best of luck, Lis. I miss you already.
